営利企業であるマイクロソフトは1975年の創業当時から、「所有」と「利用」の分離を事業経営の根幹に置いている。そのことは、下記WEBページに見られるように、自社のソフトに関して”The software is licensed, not sold.”(「本ソフトウェアは許諾されるもので、販売されるものではありません。」）と宣言していることにも示されている。
トヨタはユーザーに自動車を販売しているし、ソニーはユーザーにPCを販売している。しかしマイクロソフトはユーザーに自社のソフトを販売しているわけではない。

How can I use the software?
The software is licensed, not sold.
